Undercoat Mat
My cat’s hair is completely matted? D:?

She’s an oldie, and we know we need to brush her out. How should we go about doing this? We got a coat to brush her undercoat, and a double tooth comb from petco today. What should we do with her fur? Wash her, then comb her? Or the other way around? 0_o

Before brushing, you should carefully cut any large mats out with scissors. Brushing them out will probably be painful… kind of like when we brush knots in our hair. Then comb lightly, beginning at the tips of the fur and gradually working your way toward the skin. Unless your kitty is obviously dirty or unable to groom herself, I don’t recommend bathing. If you do need to bathe her, I would say to do it after cutting the larger mats but before brushing her. Try using a conditioning shampoo formulated for cats.

Another alternative is to take her to the vet or a groomer who works with cats and have them give her a summer shave. I have done this in the past and they’ve always seemed happier afterwards.
