It’s common knowledge that plenty of guys love nothing more than a garage filled with tools. Big tools, small tools. All hanging on a pegboard in the right place, or all carefully arranged inside of an impressive tool kit. And most people realize the danger of lending tools out, as sometimes they never return. When you have the right tools, you can do pretty much anything around the house. You can easily handle any repair that comes up.

However, if you are just starting out, and don’t have too many tools, it can be intimidating when you head on down to the do it yourself home center. So many tools, so much money. Which ones should you choose? You could easily spend thousands of dollars stocking up your garage. In this article I’ll share with you a few tips on proper tool selection, so you can slowly build your inventory without going bankrupt.

One thing you should probably do before you go shopping is to take an inventory of your house. Take a good hour or two, and give it a good once over. Make a mental note of all the repairs you think may be coming up, and separate them into the near future, and the not so near future. Then simply think of the tools you’ll need first, and focus on those. You don’t really need to buy a cement mixer if you plan on re-paving your driveway in a couple of years. Something like that can wait.

One more thing you can consider is how often you’ll be using a tool. If you are doing some kind of specific job that requires a specific tool, like a cement mixer, for example, you may be better off renting it rather than buying it. On the other hand, if you think you’ll be using the tool quite often, then it’s obviously a better idea to purchase it. By renting tools, you won’t end up with a garage full of tools you hardly ever use.

The last piece of advice is to take a longer look at your house, from a time perspective. Consider how much home repair you’ll be doing over the long term, in addition to the current jobs your considering. If you plan on spending a few years in your home, and really making a habit of home improvement, then consider getting a large tool set. These come in many sizes with many different numbers of tools. This can save you quite a bit of money in the long term.

Now that you’ve got a good idea of the kinds of tools and how many you need, you’re ready to do some shopping. Be sure to shop around, and check with your neighbors to see which brands are the most recommended. Simply find the guy on your block with the most tools in his garage, and ask his advice. Pretty soon you’ll be the expert giving advice.
