Brushing – An Essential Part Of Grooming The Dog

Dog owners should be aware of the importance of grooming the pet. Promoting the health and ensuring the happiness of the pet can be achieved with a 10 to 15 minute grooming session everyday. Most importantly, these grooming sessions strengthens the bond between owner and dog.

The excellent condition of the coat and the health of the skin is achieved and maintained with regular brushing. This grooming routine also gives the dog owner the chance to be on the lookout for any abnormalities in the fur and skin that can indicate parasite infestation or health disorders. With regular brushing, the dog owner would have the opportunity to take note of abnormalities in the skin that start to develop like rashes or bumps and lumps. External parasites will be discovered as well. As with any kind of health concern, early detection would always be important to give the dog a good chance to early and full recovery.

Tangles and mats are more prevalent in long haired breeds thus these pets would need more frequent coat brushing. Short haired dogs are considered to be low maintenance breeds but they would still require coat brushing. Although coat brushing is primarily done to maintain the excellent condition of the dog’s fur, this grooming routine has another purpose and that is to distribute the natural oils that moisturize and keep the skin healthy.

When it comes to coat brushing, no particular brush and comb will fit all breeds of dogs. Getting the right kind of grooming tool for the pet will make the task of brushing the pet easier and less time consuming. Slicker brush would do well for Doberman Pinscher, Chihuahuas, Boxers and other short and smooth coated breeds. Wide toothed comb and steel pin brushes are best for long haired dogs like the Maltese and Shih Tzu as these brushes are designed to remove mats and tangles.

Position small breeds on countertops and larger dogs on a bench or on a table to make brushing the dog’s coat less tedious and time consuming. Following the direction of hair growth, start brushing the dog’s hair from the head to the rear end. For long haired breeds, it would be best to loosen the tangles with the fingers before using the brush or the wide toothed comb. Pulling on the tangled hair will hurt the dog and make the pet resistant to the grooming routine thus it would be necessary to be gentle in brushing the pet. Thoroughly brush the hair on the tail, ears and feet.

At Sarah’s Dogs you can find out more about dog grooming as well as dog brushing.

Under the Pink

Under the Pink

$2.45

Under the Pink was Tori Amos’ follow-up to the sensationally successful Little Earthquakes and demonstrates that she had by no means run out of faeries and demons to sport with. Amos herself describes it as her “impressionistic” album–her piano playing is perfectly attuned to the subtle, shifting colors of her lyrical moods on “Bells for Her,” while “Past the Mission” indicates her growing use of…
