How To Groom Your Jack Russell
Dog ownership is a big decision, especially if you’re considering a Jack Russell. Not only do you need to think about the expense, the training and the impact on your home, but you need to think about grooming as well. The Jack Russell needs to be groomed in order to stay happy and healthy, so clear some space in your schedule for brushing.
Different Jack Russell Coats
Consider the coat of the Jack Russell. Jacks have coarse coats which come in three types: smooth (short), broken (longer), and rough (shaggy). All three coats need consistent grooming to maintain a healthy condition and reduce shedding – these dogs do shed. For some reason people think Jack Russells don’t shed because of their size, but they shed as much or more than any breed.
The Easy Way To Groom
But, despite the level of shedding involved, Jack Russell grooming really doesn’t have to be that hard. Give your dog lots of brushing to maintain a healthy coat and to diminish the amount of their shedding. The only tools you’ll need are a bristle brush, rubber mitt, and perhaps a stripping comb if the coat is rough. Rough coats will need stripping at various points during the year, but you can save a trip to the groomers if you have your own comb and can do this yourself.
Is Trimming Required?
Owners may need to trim their Jack Russell while grooming if the Jack’s coat demands it. Smooth coats don’t require much trimming as the fur is naturally short, but rough and broken coats can grow wild if left untrimmed. A little bit of attention above their eyes and under their chins can likely be performed at home, but you may want to visit a professional groomer a few times during the year.
The Role Of Bath Time
Bathing is obviously an essential part of dog ownership. Jack Russells are so active that they get into all kinds of dirt and grime, making regular baths even more important. Don’t go crazy though. Only bathe your dog a few times a year – you’ll know when you need to – as any more can cause irritation. Baths don’t put an end to shedding either, so remember to keep brushing him and vacuuming the house.
Further Grooming Points To Consider
Don’t forget your dog’s teeth and nails, as they will need attention too. Trim your dog’s nails when they grow long enough to click against the floor. Give their teeth brushings on a regular basis to protect against any oral infections and speak to your vet if you need any assistance with this.
In brief, Jack Russell grooming is a must if you want your dog to look and feel his best. Brushing his coat and his teeth, trimming his nails, and offering a bath a few times a year is really pretty simple, and your Jack will be so thankful to have this new routine.
