No Bark Collars – Ethical Or Not?
There are three different methods currently in use as no bark collars for dogs. They are all effective in reducing barking, but some people wonder if using these collars are ethical. If you own a dog, you should know at least a bit about the type of no bark collar that you plan to use on your dog.
Spray Collars
Some no bark collars emit a citrus smell if the dog barks for long. Dogs don’t like this smell, so they will stop barking in order to avoid it. Some collars also give a warning “hiss” sound, so the dog can stop barking before the smell is sprayed on its muzzle if he listens and heeds the warning sound. Professional dog trainers and veterinarians consider the use of these collars ethical, since the dog feels no pain and can even avoid the discomfort.
Sonic No Bark Collars
These collars emit a high pitched sound whenever the dog barks. This tone is similar to the dog whistle sound. Most humans can’t hear it or be annoyed by it, but dogs can and will stop barking once they realize that when they stop barking the high pitched tone goes away. Again, experts and trainers don’t feel that these collars are unethical, as there is no pain or injury to the dog. Dogs only get a bit annoyed, and they learn how to avoid that eventually. Note: This is the least effective type of no bark collar, as dogs can get used to the sound over time, so don’t overdo it.
Electronic No Bark Collars
When the electronic collar “hears” the dog bark, it gives the dog a mild electrical shock. The shock isn’t painful, it’s similar to what you feel when you handle fabrics or walk over a rug. Due to its name, people think that this type of collar is cruel and unethical and shouldn’t be used on animals. The main reason why these people consider this collar unethical is that it actually causes a physical stimulus that can be felt by the dog. And well, some people think that’s not ok. But does it work? Yes, it does; so condiser it an option if your dog tends to bark too much.
There are three types of no bark collars that you can use to train your dog: citrus spray collars, sonic or ultrasonic collars, and electrical shock collars. Most people have no problems with spray collars or sonic collars, but the idea of an electrical shock makes them think that shock collars aren’t good for dogs. However, all three methods are perfectly safe for dogs.
