Father Of The Groom Toast – How To Do It
Writing down the first few lines of the father of the groom toast is arguably more difficult than it seems. The weeks may drag on but no good introductory line falls on your lap. Write the ideas that come to your mind – Never mind that the idea is not brilliant enough, just don’t shoot it them. Doing so will encourage your head to work double time. Only after you’re done with your speech would you start editing it. This is the phase when you will nit-pick ideas that are brilliant and those that are not.
Use regular English – Many people fall into the trap of using highfaluting words, thinking that it could make them look more impressive. The truth is, big words don’t invite the audience to listen to you. When your speech is incomprehensible, their interest would die down and eventually you’d be left with only a few who would listen to you out of respect. Thus, it is advisable to stick with words and languages that your audience is familiar with.
Follow a cohesive theme – Don’t put different ideas in a single paragraph, refrain from discussing too many ideas as well. This will effectively confuse the audience as to the points you are driving at. Use one cohesive theme for the entire speech and use minimal sub-topics if necessary.
Make your speech short – Don’t drag your speech with boring and lengthy details. It is always better to have a short speech that entertains your audience than a long one that bores them.
Introduce yourself – A lot of your son and his bride’s guests know you as the father of the groom but there are still be those who would wonder about the identity of the man at the podium. For the sake of those people who don’t know who you are, briefly introduce yourself. When preparing your speech, this may be skipped but you should be able to remember it before you proceed with your speech.
Don’t touch the alcohol – The temptation to drink something that can calm you may be strong if you can already hear your heartbeat in your ears. No matter how strong the desire to drink something, however, try to keep your head as clear as possible before you take the podium. This will make you successfully deliver a speech without you having to slur through it.
Remember to offer the toast – The father of the groom toast is presented to the newlyweds or on their behalf. This is where expression of best wishes for good marriage and good life are presented.
