Why You Should Buy A Small Dog
Dogs bring many benefits to their owners. Dogs are an unequivicable source of companionship, they can help reduce your stress levels, improve your blood pressure, they love unconditionally, lift your mood, and provide a vocal incentive to exercise more. Not only that, they can be a great way of meeting people whilst you’re both out for a walk. And if you’ve got kids, dogs can teach them how to be responsible and care for others.
But, what type of dog should you get – large or small?
Obviously, if you don’t have a big yard or live in a condo, you may not have a lot of choice. But even if you have a large backyard, there are many benefits to getting a small dog that bear weight on other issues than the size of your home.
For example, if you have children or pets, a smaller dog can be less threatening. Also, if you’d like your children to take an active role in caring for the dog, then a small dog will be a lot easier for them to cope with. There are always exceptions to the rule, however. Some [large dog breeds do make great family pets, even better than some small ones. Breeds like the Tibetan Spaniel dog breed, chihuahuas, miniature poodles, and maltese, and similar breeds, are not really suited to families with children who are too young to know how to moderate their behaviour around dogs.
Or, if you are sick, older, or not particularly strong, getting a small dog is a more realistic option. Large dogs weight more – so they are going to be correspondingly more difficult to handle on a physical level. For example, walking an excited, large dog on a leash might be near impossible if your dog becomes intent on chasing a car, or another dog. As well, there are going to be occasions when you’ll need to lift your canine friend. If you don’t live with someone who can assist you, this could be a problem, particularly when your dog grows old. Will you be able to handle him to check his teeth, and be able to establish yourself as ‘top dog’ when training your dog.
Another factor to think about is that large dogs need more exercise as a rule, although a few smaller dogs also need a lot of exercise as well. This is especially true for working dogs, irrespective of the size they come in, such as the border collie dog breed. Border collies are very high energy, intelligent and active dogs. They were bred to herd cattle and sheep, and consequently they have particularly high stamina and endurance. They can run for hours, although as a pet owner, two hours of exercise – both physical and mental, ideally – would be sufficient. So, for a person with a busy lifestyle, who’s unable to devote the time to your dog, a border collie or similar would not be the right pet.
Small dog breeds that are recommended for families with kids include boston terriers, border terriers, bichon frise, Miniature English Bulldogs, Kerry Blue Terriers, English Cocker Spaniels, Miniature Australian Shepherds, and Miniature Australian Bulldogs}. And small breeds like the French bulldog, which are happy and easygoing dogs that love their humans, and don’t need a lot of exercise, are recommended for the elderly.

Animal Essentials Fish Oil Plus for Dogs and Cats, 180 Capsules $30.33 Wild caught fish oils serve as the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids for dogs and cats. While flax oil is also rich in Omega 3s, it is not a complete source. Why? Because the Alpha-linolenic acid, (ALA) in flax oil does not convert to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at levels that confer any physiological benefit— and studies show that EPA conversion is deficient too.
