The Right Way to Apply Hair Color or Retouch Your Hair Color

Hi, I’m Jasen James, a professional hair colorist and your HairColorHelper. I’m here to answer your questions about coloring your hair at home. Many of you wonder how to apply your color properly.

Most of you are retouching and the biggest mistake people make is to put all the color on your entire head, all at once. If you’ve been doing this, please stop! You’re a musher! A musher over-processes her hair and then it becomes dry and lifeless. Am I right?

One secret to good color results is to treat the hair at the scalp differently from the ends. The hair on your ends is fragile and porous from all those months of blow dryers and styling tools. Show them some love. They don’t need new color every single time. You may just need to apply the color at the roots where you see your outgrowth. Stop where the outgrowth stops.

Check the color on the ends before you start your color session. Do this in daylight and assess the situation. Are the ends the same color as the hair at the top? Or are they brassy and faded? If the latter is the case, you’ll need to correct these problems. Pull through the color from scalp to ends during the last few minutes of the color application.

If your ends are not brassy or faded, then don’t pull through the color. Skip this step and refresh them the next time you color.

Check the directions that come with your product. Most brands tell you to put color on the ends for the last five or ten minutes. Follow these instructions and use a timer. It’s your new best friend.
