Breeding Labradors for the Best of the Breed

If you are interested in breeding Labradors then there are some things you should know.It is especially important if you plan to breed labradors to enter them into dog shows. The goal of breeding Labradors, or any dog, is for the puppy to have the ideal characteristics for which you are looking.However, you need to know which Labrador characteristics are more favorable before breeding otherwise you won't know what dogs to breed for desired results. Learning these traits will help you to be a successful breeder of Labradors. At the dog show it could make all the difference in winning that first place ribbon.

There are certain variations of the Labrador breed that would be actually be penalized in a dog show. The Labrador retriever could be one for instance. The retriever is a medium built dog and does not make a good show dog due to its features.And so are dogs that are leggy tall dogs, or long dogs, or cloddy dogs, or the weedy light dogs. These are all given penalties at dog shows because they contradict the sturdy, proportionate build of the Labrador breed.

Certain anatomical characteristics are important when breeding Labradors. The Labrador's head preferrably should have clean cheeks, white teeth, a powerful muzzle, and a broad snout.The dog's nose color can vary, depending on the dog"s coat color. The nostrils on its nose is to be open and wide. The eyes should have a kind expression to them and be slightly triangular in shape.Lastly, the ears should drop and be short and triangular in shape.

A favorable temperament is the key to breeding Labradors.At the dog shows this is pleasing to the judges.  Labrador retrievers are eager to please and they are also very outgoing and friendly animals.  Labradors are also quite intelligent.  Judges look for these characteristics when evaluating Labradors in a dog show.

There are black Labradors and yellow Labradors and chocolate Labradors.Though yellow dogs may vary in shades of color it is not preferrable and neither are white spots on the chest. Judges do not penalize Labradors that have white hairs because of aging or scarring which is really great news.

Labradors who are bred to a specific weight and height are what judges look for. They will be checking to see that the typical height and weight requirements have been met.For males the height should be no more than twety-four and half inches tall. Between 65-80 pounds is what a male Labrador should weigh.Between twenty-one and a half and twenty-three and a half inches is the typical height of a female Labrador.The ideal weight is fifty-five pounds to seventy pounds for females.

It is important to be aware of dog show criteria when you are breeding Labradors. You want to be able to breed certain characteristics and traits for the best results.  Breeding Labradors can be a challenge, but it can be very rewarding if you are successful and achieve your goals.
