Question about walking?
So I have a Golden retriever pup almost 5 months old and we have a little trouble walking. I have been using the Gentle Leader Headcollar for about a month now and it seems that he has gotten a little better But when I took him out for a walk today with a normal collar, he just started to pull again. I was just wondering how long should I continue using the gentle leader and just give me some walking tips in general plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Thank you and happy new year!
I really dont want to use a prong collar…
What if my dog just lays there?
If you really want to control him you should use a “Halti” or a lead similar to that (look it up on the net to find out more) The best way to controll his movement is to have control of his head.
Next thing is to be consistant, Walk slowly changing direction suddenly when he does not expect it. YOU are the boss and YOU are in charge, make sure he knows that.
Dont rush anywhere, if he drags you to where he wants to go all the time then he will carrying doing so, Its like a treat, the faster he gets there the better, dont let him.
If he`s to distracted by surroundings and thats why he Pulls use a toy to distract him and then he will have all his attention on you.
Or lastly which is what I did when my dog was a pup was not feeding her till after we went out:
If youre dog is really hungry and then you go out with treats, Praise her by givin her a treat when she walks to heal, This way you are positivly reinforcing her beause she will know if she walks to heal she will recieve food (her treat) and since she will be extra hungry this will be a bonus!
Whatever method you choose (whether its one of them or two) Keep being consistant, keep to the rigime or method, dogs like order and dont like to much change!
Keep training her and dont forget to let her off now and then Retrievers need lots of exercise and make sure you socilaize her too!
Good-luck!
