Coffee shop questionnaire!?

Hi everyone, would really appreciate it if you could complete this short questionnaire!

1) Do you have a favorite coffee shop? (Yes or No)

Yes

2) Why would you say this is your favourite?

It’s a local establishment and not a big chain, so it’s a more community-based atmosphere. They also have interesting things going on all the time; live music, comedians, and my personal favorite, Open Mic Night. Then there are also times when you can go and just sit with a book, a laptop, or just people-watch. It’s different every time I go in. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that it’s VERY small, and when something is going on you sometimes can’t get a seat.

3) How often do you visit this particular one?

About once a week, when I lived in that area.

4) What is your favourite beverage?

Peppermint tea. It’s cheap and delicious.

5) Who would you say is the market leader for coffee shops?

I guess Starbucks, though they certainly don’t get any help from me.

6) What products would you like to see in a coffee shop?

More varieties of tea, and some healthy, home-made snack type options for if you’re just a little bit hungry but don’t want a pastry. Like tapas or something.

7) Are you often enticed by special promotions and advertising? (Yes or No)

Meh, sometimes. It may influence my decision if I was already considering going there anyway, but probably not beyond that. If you are talking about a product, that is. I am more interested in the atmosphere of a coffee shop than anything else, so I think a better strategy to get people like me to come to a certain place would be to have some special event which causes me to stay there for a long period of time. Thus, I smell the food and the drinks, and the longer I stay the more stuff I want.

How important to you are additional features such as wi-fi, interior design etc?

Wi-fi is absolutely essential for me. I don’t use it every time, but one of my favorite things to do is go to a coffee shop with my laptop and work on my novels or short stories. I have to have that option if I am going to frequent a coffee shop, or else I probably wouldn’t consider it too often. Interior design is important as well for the atmosphere, but it doesn’t have to be elaborate. Tons of decorations are more distracting and annoying than anything else. A little bit of ambient music can be cool sometimes, but I think too much or too loud usually distracts from whatever I’m doing. Though, I suppose I should say that no one wants to be in a big silent room, so I think the music thing depends on how many people are in the shop at the moment. It’s all about atmosphere. The main thing is to not be pretentious; themes are OK, but anything mass-produced-looking, sterile-looking… it’s difficult to describe without examples. Starbucks, for instance, tries to put on an indie, cultured image, but fails because the commercialism is obvious, which in principle contradicts the ideas associated with “indie” and everything else it tries to do. Does that make sense?

9) How important would you say a coffee shops branding is?

I’m not sure what you mean by branding… Personally, I try to avoid big chain names. I like the atmosphere and idea of a locally owned, mom-and-pop shop. I refuse to buy from the huge, commercialized ones, like Starbucks.

10) Would you be interested in a new, eco-friendly, seasonally themed coffee shop?

That does sound promising. The only thing I would point out is that the eco-friendly thing has the potential for pretentiousness… not that it’s not a good thing in general, but it is sort of a fad going around now. I would say that you’d just have to make sure you were being genuine about the eco-friendly thing; make it personal, make sure customers know that there is some person in their community that really believes in this stuff, and just wants to share it with everyone. Avoid preachy environmentalism. I do really like the seasonal idea.
