Extra Large Dog House
All dog houses have certain requirements they should all possess no matter what size they are. It has become increasingly more common for dog owners to get extravagant and large dog houses for their pet, even if their dog is small or medium in size. Extra large dog houses can be fun to shop for and purchase, and if properly designed your dog can really enjoy them. When you go shopping for an extra large dog house for your dog make sure you keep in mind the basic features all dog houses should have.
A dog house needs to protect your dog from the heat by shielding it from the heat. If you live in a place that is hot most of the time, make sure whatever dog house you purchase allows adequate air flow or is even fitted with a small air conditioning unit. Likewise, if your home is in a place where it is mostly cold, you will want to make sure the dog house you choose is well insulated.
A dog house also must protect your dog from the other elements such as rain, snow, and ice. The dog house you choose must be waterproof and not allow any water or moisture to pool in the bottom. Plastic dog houses are inherently waterproof, but if you buy a wooden one make sure it is treated to ensure that it will not leak or take on water. Another element that can be hazardous to a dog’s health is high wind. Make sure the dog house you choose will not de drafty and is heavy enough so that it will not blow away or get knocked over in high winds.
A dog house should also make your dog feel comfortable and secure. Most people assume that the large space afforded by an extra large dog house is best for their dog, but this is not always the case. Most dogs prefer a smaller area to curl up in, one that is large enough for them to stand up in and stretch out but not one that is overly roomy. This does not mean that an extra large dog house, it not a good choice, but you have to look closely at design to make sure your dog will feel secure in it.
Large open dog houses with just one room are a great fit for large dogs such as Great Danes, Rottweilers, and even big Labs. They will feel comfortable in a large space as they will fill most of it. However, if you have a small or medium dog you can still purchase an extra large dog house providing it has a smaller space inside so that your dog feels secure. If your dog is smaller, find a large dog house that has more than one room or is divided so that your dog can still enjoy the space without feeling lost. Your dog will prefer to curl up in a smaller space and this way you can enjoy the beauty of a big house while making your dog feel secure.
