Choose The Right Mountain Bike Tyres For Your Style Of Riding
The type of tyres you choose on your bike is influenced mainly by what you are using your bike for most. Mountain bikes can be used on many types of ground and for disciplines that need different skill sets as much as different tyres. Get the right mountain bike tyres and they will improve your riding and increase your safety.
Tyres are either tubeless or they come with an inner tube to keep them inflated, so the question is which do you choose?
Generally tubeless tyres have a thick side-wall that locks into a specific sealed-bed rim. These tyres can take a punding over rough ground so they are just right for downhill but the drawback is the higher cost.
The benefits of an airtight seal and a puncture resistant, low pressure, stable performance are outweighed by the high cost. You also need a clean rim and tyre to fit them, along with a big pump to inflate them.
Clean conditions are usually unavailable if the tyre has to be replaced on the trail. Even with a large pump you’ll often have to use an inner tube to get you back home and repair the tyre there. Also while small holes might be repairable, a big hole can mean the tyre is completely written off as well.
Tubeless tyres are also heavier, so if fast start times and riding speeds are required, pick a lighter tyre. Tyres with inner tubes offer greater flexibility and are usually lighter. You can get them in a greater number of designs and tread styles, so getting one to suit your style might be easier as well.
You can now get kits to convert a conventional tyre with an inner tube to a tubeless tyre. These mix a latex-based filler liquid and a rubber rim strip to seal the inside of the tyre and the rim. You will probably have to top off the filler now and then, but the cost is still much less than a standard thick wall tubeless tyre.
You still get most of the benefits of a tubeless tyre but with a much broader range of rims and treads to choose from, and only the cost of the kit and latex top ups. They are also lighter in weight but similar repair problems occur on the trail unfortunately.
Whichever sort of tyre you pick it is important to replace your tyres fairly often. A blow out on a trail can cause injury to you or other riders or even cost you a competition. With the right selection and proper maintenance your tyres will make a big difference to your riding.
