has anyone ever used a head collar?
I’m taking my dog to Petsmart in the morning, and i was thinking about buying a head collar for her, since it’s supposed to help with pulling when we go for a walk.
does it really work, and help the pulling?
btw; she’s a 8 month old, 60 lb, Yellow Labrador.
Yes they work brilliantly!
They are designed to work with the natural instinct of following the nose. Even a small amount of pressure on it will bring their body back around and stop pulling.
Then basically, once you can stop the pulling easily, they learn to walk nicely, because they figure out that walking nicely is way more fun. It basically makes them not pull, then when that stops they learn how to walk well on a leash.
I swear by them, they work so well. Some dogs don’t like them at first, because they aren’t used to having something around their nose, but it doesn’t hurt them, and is nicer than when they pull on a collar and half-strangle themselves. When you first use it, just put it on, fit it, then give lots of praise and some treats just so they accept it. Once walking, they’re usually okay, but they may try to rub it off on the ground. Just get them back up. It doesn’t hurt them, it’s just a strange feeling.
Trust me, they work brilliantly. My Samoyed used to be the worst puller, he would pull and pull and end up almost strangling himself, and whoever was walking was in danger of being pulled over. We got the head collar (a Halti), the behaviour stopped, and he learned to walk nicely. Nowadays he doesn’t wear it, but sometimes I give him a bit of a refresher when he starts to pull again, but that’s all he needs.
