My labrador tore his achilles and did not have surgery since it wasn’t a full tear. Any suggestions for makin
He tore it in October. Went to a specialist in Orchard Park NY who said surgery couldn’t repair a partial tear like his. He was in a cast for 8 weeks. His toes are a bit curled, and he’s not bearing FULL weight on the leg. He walks ok, favors that leg a bit but is sore after walking. He used to be VERY active and I want to still be able to take him on long walks. Any suggestions? He’s on glycoflex III and rimadyl when needed.
That type of injury is very painful and it is posible the slight favour he shows is memory reflex due to the pain he once felt. It takes a long time for the tendon to fully repair itself and with the new fibers it can sometimes rub as it is slightly thicker than before. Its a good thing they did not operate as this would have increased the recovery time and also added a open wound that can become infected at least thats not an issue too.
The glycofelx is ideal to help condition the injury from within and the rimadyl to help any obvious pain. Stretching and flexibility exercises to help the tendon heal without shortening and becoming chronically painful. Some times its stiff and by phyiscall handelling the leg and bending it for them gently you can help elongate the muscle improving pain. Heat therapy to improve blood circulation, which aidS the healing process can be applied by buying packs that self heat. Horse shops sell them as do some sports shops. Or a hot water bottle but I prefer the wraps you can buy. Massage is an obvious one but really does help improve circulation and feels good at the same time. Swimming at hydro pools allows the dog to exercise without any strain on the foot which can help rebuild the mussel from being in the cast.
Cant see why you can in the near future take him on long walks its just a bit of a recovery time with this sort of thing.
