How can i make my 1 year old dog stop barking?

My dog is 1 year old but she always barks whenever a person walks by in front of our house. And whenever someone visits our house, she starts barking at them. She is a maltese, so she can bark pretty loud. I want her to stop barking and be friendly to our visitors. Can I train her without spending too much money?

PetSmart and PetCo offer pretty good training classes that are only about $99 for 8 sessions. The best part about it access to the trainer to ask all of your questions. One bit of advice that I heard from our trainer about excessive barking was to ignore the dog when they did it. It is attention getting behavior and when you pay attention to her, even in a negative way, she is rewarded. The training classes are also good for socialization with other dogs and people.
