Why would my 1 year old dog’s canine tooth have broken off?

We noticed blood on the floor where the dog had been standing. After checking his paws and body we realized the blood was coming from his mouth. We checked his teeth and noticed that his upper left canine tooth was broken off. It doesn’t appear that he’s in any pain however he’s only a year old and doesn’t chew on lots of hard toys. How could this have happened?

This is much more common than you might thing especially among enthusiastic chewers or very active or clumbsy dogs. My dog has a small chip on his canine from chewing on a long, hard bone (before I realize these bones are far too hard for his teeth!).

So he could have been chewing on something hard or could have ran into something. It is also possible that his tooth was already a little messed up from a previous injury (maybe it cracked when chewing another time or didn’t grow right, maybe he has slight gum disease or just bad teeth).

It isn’t a big deal, it sounds bad enough that he will have to have the tooth extracted or have a root canal. If you don’t have the root canal you might need it later if problems develop. If possible I would find a vet who specializes or only does dentistry. You might have to drive but it is worth it to have the procedure done right!

Dogs can get fake teeth, but if he isn’t a working dog who needs to bite then there is no need. I would just check the gap daily to make sure that it is healing find after the surgery and make sure no food is accumulated in it or stuck in it.
