Egyptians artefacts reveal they knew the heart was an essential organ of the body. Many believed the heart had a supernatural connection to the person. The Far East and the ancient Egyptians to some degree think the same about the heart.
Ancient Egypt’s Beliefs About The Heart
These ancient Egyptian archaeological discoveries tell us that they believed the seat of personality and of human wisdom originates in the heart. They believed that pathways from the heart led to other regions of the body. The flow of fluids, such as nutrients and blood, were transmitted to parts of the body by these pathways. They thought that if there were a blockage of one of the channels, disease would occur in the body.
Human awareness, the emotions, and the soul, so it was thought… all had their foundation in the heart. Even in these modern times we use the heart to describe feelings and emotions in song and poetry. In those ancient times they believed God used the heart to speak to us. Over and over we have heard it over the years, “She has a broken heart”. The ancient Egyptians had a good understanding of health and medical matters.
History Of Heart Disease And The Middle Ages
Research on the history of heart disease of the English speaking people in the middle ages, indicate they did not have much disease caused by cholesterol. The Briton’s in the middle ages had quite healthy hearts and thus few incidences of heart disease. They ate foods that were not processed and did not contain very much fatty compounds. Additionally many of the foods in those days like vegetables, had a higher content of vitamins and were organically grown.
The Modern Age And Cardiovascular Disease
In pre-industrial times, medical research on the history of heart disease, tells us that most people did not suffer from heart ailments and subsequent death from cardiovascular disease.
Society was powerfully impacted by the industrial revolution in the 1800′s. Also diseases of the heart were more common after the start of the industrial revolution. With the introduction of modern technology came a decrease in the need for physical labour to keep industry operational. Manual labour helped to keep the heart and the body overall, fit and strong. Plus the added benefit of manual labour is the reduction of fatty tissue throughout the body, including the heart, and so that helps reduces the chances of heart problems such as heart failure.
The Modern Age And Diet
As we all know nowadays, the foods we eat play a huge role in the possibility of whether or not we will have any cardiovascular ailments. Foods high in trans fatty acids, saturated fats, as well as salt, and other types of food are very destructive to the heart. Salt and fat found in food at fast food chain restaurants are known to increase our risk of coronary heart disease. Eating canned food is certainly a part of life nowadays, but some of the additives found in canned foods may not be good for our health. Unprocessed foods are more readily absorbed than processed foods.
