Need a good bark collar for my dog?

I have tried everything to get my 3 year old mini schnauzer to stop barking crazily whenever someone comes to the door. Literally everything. I even went and bought one of those citronella collars, but besides the fact that the thing constantly needs to be refilled, it barely phases her when she gets excited. She is a good dog, smart and training her has been a breeze, but the barking when someone comes to the door is getting to be very out of hand. i hate to resort to it, because i feel it is kinda inhumane, but i need a recommendation on a good electric bark collar. Also any other tips would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A bark collar is unlikely to solve your problem. Depending on the type of collar, the rate of success you can expect is roughly 50-75%. Citronella collars pick up sounds via a small microphone that’s very sensitive, so sometimes dogs get sprayed even when they’re not barking. And once the citronella reservoir is empty, the dog will start barking nonstop again so it doesn’t actually do anything to deter the behavior. Aversive sound collars (which emit a high-frequency sound) and electric shock collars will cause your dog a lot of unnecessary stress and pain, and many dogs will continue to bark even while they’re being shocked.

Bark collars are not going to solve your problem. You don’t need any special equipment to keep your dog from barking. What you DO need is patience, and plenty of it. You can’t expect any method to stop the barking overnight, or even within a few days. You need to be willing to devote the time to figure out what your dog is motivated by and find something to reward her with that she will find more worthwhile than barking.

The reason your dog is barking could be because she’s naturally territorial. It could also be caused by boredom due to lack of exercise and/or attention. Do you ignore her most of time? Small dogs often bark because it’s the only way they can get attention. Even if they’re being yelled at, they’re still being rewarded by you paying attention to them.

My family has a pomeranian who barks constantly and all they do is yell at him, which only makes it worse. The last time I visited, I tried to teach them that dogs respond much better to positive rewards for good behavior than punishments for unwanted behavior. Whenever he started barking, I would calmly tell him to sit and then stay. That focuses his attention elsewhere and usually at least slows down the barking. While I’m making him stay, if he can stay quiet for five seconds, I immediately tell him what a good boy he is. If he continues being quiet for 10 more seconds, I praise him like he’s the greatest dog ever to exist. Keep doing this and he’ll understand that if he’s behaving and being quiet, he’ll get lots of love and attention from you, and it’ll teach him what he can do to make you happy.

A lot of dog owners get frustrated because they focus on punishing bad behaviors, but all this does is make the dog more depressed and volatile simply because he doesn’t know what you want from him.
