My Review of the Havahart 1085 EZ Set Live Animal Trap-Havahart Live Traps

This past weekend I attended my first competitive coon hunt. It was extremely interesting to me. For those who do not know what a coon hunt is I will explain. First of all, a coon is a raccoon. Raccoons are nocturnal animals that eat trash and create lots of trouble for those they decide to pester. Coon hunting is a sport where no coons are injured. A coon dog or commonly referred to as hound dog, chases a raccon up a tree. When the coon dog has treed the coon he will let his master know with a bark or a howl. The hunter has to know for sure if the dog has really treed a coon or if it is just on the trail of another animal. In a competitive coon hunt a team of 3 to 4 hunters will go out with their dogs. When they drop a dog they have to wait for it to tree a coon. When the dog is on a trail he will let his master know. The hunter then has to call a strike. If he is wrong he loses points, if he is right he gets points. When the dog is at the tree all the hunters will go to the tree. The hunter then gets points if the dog has indeed treed a coon. If it is not a coon then he loses points. Sometimes you can’t see anything. In this case the points still go to the hunter. Whichever hunter has the most points, wins. If there are multiple teams hunting each team winner will hunt again. The winner usually wins a monetary reward.

After attending this event I started to think about how much work and effort goes into this activity. Each dog has to be trained to specifically track coons. This seems like a large feat in my mind. If I have a problem with a raccoon I would like to find him and get rid of him, but I don’t believe in killing an innocent animal. I started researching other methods of “coon hunting.” I found the
